How you breathe is very important in meditation.  Breathing normally isn't enough to put your body and mind into the right contemplative state for meditation. Most of the time the way that you breathe normally is barely enough to keep you functioning if you're like most people.  Many people don't realize how important the way that they breathe is. Breathing can affect your health and your mood.

It's impossible to meditate effectively without learning to breathe in a more concentrated, mindful manner.  During the day and when you get stressed without noticing it you will start to take shallow, quick breaths as if you have been exercising.  If you breathe that way for a prolonged period of time your body won't be getting the oxygen that it needs to function properly and to expel wastes.  One of the reasons that you feel so good after a few deep breaths is because the body uses that oxygen to expel gases and other waste products from the body.

It's not a coincidence that psychiatrists and counselors tell people to take a few deep breaths when they are angry or upset.  It's been proven over and over again in medical studies that just a minute or two of controlled deep breathing can dramatically change a person's mood and reduce anger and stress.  Controlled deep breathing can also help manage panic disorders, social anxiety, and depression by flooding the body with the oxygen it needs to function properly which can help alleviate the physical symptoms of those disorders.

Learning how to breathe is vital for the purposes of meditation, it has a calming effect, and gives you that pick me up feel as well.
